Board Director (Clinical Governance) – Registered Nurse – Volunteer Role

Board Director (Clinical Governance – Registered Nurse)
Volunteer Role | Gippsland Multicultural Services (GMS) | Gippsland, VIC

Gippsland Multicultural Services is seeking a Registered Nurse to join our Board as a Volunteer Director (Clinical Governance).

About GMS

GMS is reconnecting with its roots as a Migrant Resource Centre while strengthening its role as an aged care and community support provider across Gippsland.

We work within a framework of safety, respect and cultural humility. Our team brings diverse lived experiences, and this diversity strengthens how we support community.

About the Role

This is a Board-level governance role contributing to oversight of quality, safety and clinical risk within a non-clinical service model.

GMS delivers personal care and community support in people’s homes. As part of our commitment to service excellence and Aged Care reform readiness, we are strengthening how we:

  • identify emerging clinical risk
  • support clear and appropriate escalation
  • engage with external clinical expertise

The Board Director (Clinical Governance) contributes to ensuring these systems are fit-for-purpose, proportionate and responsive to community context.

Our Way of Working

We are intentional about how we work:

  • We value reflection over perfection
  • We name complexity and work with it
  • We use different decision-making approaches depending on context
  • We welcome diverse styles of thinking, communication and leadership
  • We prioritise trust, clarity and respectful challenge

The Reality Check — What This Role Is Really Like

GMS is continuing to strengthen its governance maturity, including a transition towards a more skills-based Board aligned to organisational growth.

This role contributes to that evolution.

  • The organisation is evolving, with systems and frameworks continuing to develop
  • Governance discussions reflect a balance of experience, emerging capability and diverse perspectives
  • Clinical risk sits within a broader context of community care, cultural responsiveness and practical service delivery
  • Board members contribute their expertise while working collectively within a shared governance framework

People who thrive in this environment are comfortable:

  • contributing to a Board that is building capability over time
  • engaging in reflective, respectful dialogue
  • supporting clarity and structure as systems mature
  • working with complexity without needing everything to be fully defined

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome applicants who bring:

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse (AHPRA)
  • Understanding of clinical risk in community or aged care settings
  • Ability to contribute at a strategic governance level
  • Interest in strengthening safe, proportionate escalation systems
  • Cultural humility and a reflective approach to practice

Desirable:

  • Previous Board or governance experience
  • Completion of the Australian Institute of Company Directors course or equivalent governance training
  • Experience working with multicultural communities

Commitment

  • Approximately 8-10 Board meetings per year
  • Participation in subcommittees as required
  • Preparation and engagement in strategic discussions

Why Join GMS?

  • Contribute to service excellence in community-based care
  • Be part of an organisation navigating growth and reform with intention
  • Support meaningful impact across multicultural communities in Gippsland
  • Contribute to a Board strengthening its capability through a skills-based governance model
